Confidence

“Kasparov can calculate more alternatives, whereas my intuition is better. I immediately know how to rate a situation and what plan is necessary. I am clearly superior to him in that respect.” – no shortage of confidence from the 19 year old worlds no 1 chess player. I only wish I could have been so sure of myself at 19.

  1. The question is, sure of yourself on what? It’s not implausible the #1 expert in a field can evaluate the scenario correctly. Most 19 year olds do not possess expertise for similarly relevant scenarios, so I don’t think the comparison is necessarily apt.

  2. Jeff, I was always amazed by Kasparov’s style. I mean, go back twenty years and you can literally hear Kasparov saying similar stuff about Karpov. So if a 19yo knows he has a better intuition wrt. chess, then this means a lot.

I read this story a few days ago, and could only say “Wow …” to myself =)
